The Buddy Walk was created by National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome, and to celebrate October as National Down Syndrome Awareness Month.  There were 17 walks that year.  There are now over 270 walks held all over the U.S. and even abroad!

Our 11th Annual Buddy Walks will be held on Sunday, September 25, 2011, at Payson Park in Portland and at Capitol Park in Augusta.  FMI,  please visit our Buddy Walk page.

Book Donation Project

Each year, MDSN members choose one book about Down syndrome that they feel has been invaluable.  We purchase over 300 copies of that book, and distribute them, free of charge, to every public library and college/university library in the state.  We alternate between a children's book, and an adult book.  Past donations have included; Babies with Down Syndrome; A New Parents Guide by Karen Stray-Gundersen, My Friend Isabelle by Eliza Woloson, Adventures In The Mainstream: Coming of Age with Down Syndrome by Greg Palmer, and more.  It is our hope that by donating these books, we can help to dispel long held myths and stereotypes about people with Down syndrome.  If you would like more infomation, please email books@dsmaine.org.

Adaptive Dance Program

102109_24757_1.jpgIn 2006, MDSN partnered with Maine State Ballet in order to offer the state's first Adaptive Dance program.  Modeled after the very successful program at Boston Ballet, the Adaptive Dance Program at Maine State Ballet incoporates ballet, rhythmic movement and games, and more.  It is not therapy - on the contrary, it is a break from therapy, a chance for our kids to express themselves through movement.  It has also proved a stepping stone for some students, who have now moved into "regular" ballet classes.  FMI on this wonderful program, please contact Maine State Ballet at (207) 781-7672.

Challenger League T-Ball

Since 2008, MDSN has partnered with Deering Little League to offer a Challenger League T-Ball program.  This program runs in the spring and early summer, and is open to children of any disability, and their siblings, ages 6 and up.  If you would like more information about this great experience, please email us at challenger@dsmaine.org.
